We keep two things, and sell neither.

Your location

What
Where you are, while the app is open.
Why
To measure the drive to each forecourt.
Kept
On your phone, with your last search area and prices, so the map opens there. Our server forgets where you are within 15 minutes.

How the app is used

What
The screens you use, the forecourts you open and the area you search in.
Why
So we can see what works, and fix what breaks.
Kept
By Fuelspot, for up to a year, and not linked to your name. Switch it off any time in About.

Your location

Fuelspot asks for your location only while the app is open. It goes to Fuelspot’s server in London, which works out the drive from where you are to each forecourt with a router of our own, built on OpenStreetMap. Your location isn’t sent anywhere else. The server keeps each answer in memory for up to 15 minutes, for a search again from the same spot, and doesn’t write your location down. Your phone keeps where you last searched from and the prices that came back, so they can be shown when there’s no signal.

Places you search

Postcodes are looked up with postcodes.io and town and place names in Fuelspot’s own list. Neither is told who you are. Your last few places are kept on your phone.

How the app is used

Which screens you open, what you tap, what the app answered and which forecourts you open or ask directions to go to PostHog, in the EU, under a random ID made on your phone, never your name. With them goes roughly where you searched: the postcode district, such as BS2, and a square about half a mile across, never the exact spot, the full postcode or a place’s name. PostHog works out your town or city from your IP address and keeps that, never the address itself. Recordings of the screen are made with the map, the places and anything you type blanked out. Events are kept for up to a year and recordings for a month. We do this because we have a legitimate interest in seeing how Fuelspot is used and making it better. Switch it off any time in About, under Share how you use Fuelspot, and nothing more is sent.

When something breaks

Crash reports, with what broke and where in the code, and how long screens and requests take go to Sentry, in the EU, with nothing about you or where you are. They’re kept for up to 90 days, and are still sent with sharing switched off, so we can fix what breaks.

Your car

Your car’s fuel, tank and economy stay on your phone. Only the fuel is sent, to find its prices.
